Welcome to the first issue of The North Forge Report.

Every week, this briefing tracks how artificial intelligence is reshaping business, public services and the economy across North East England — cutting through the noise to focus on what's actually shifting, who's moving, and what it means for your organisation.

Issue 1 is different. Before we track the news, we wanted to set the stage.

We've spent months researching AI adoption across the UK — and the findings are stark. Britain is moving fast. The North East has an extraordinary opportunity. And most businesses are still at the starting line.

Here's what the data shows.

🔍 FIVE FINDINGS EVERY BUSINESS LEADER SHOULD KNOW

1. Britain has entered the AI economy.

The UK now has 5,800 AI companies generating £23.9 billion in revenue — a sector that has grown 150 times faster than the economy as a whole since 2022.

For businesses, this is no longer a future trend. It is a present-day productivity opportunity.

2. Most businesses are still at the starting line.

Despite the noise, most UK businesses are not yet using AI in a structured way. Awareness is high. Structured adoption is not.

Some are experimenting with tools. Some have staff quietly using AI without leadership knowing. Very few have a clear roadmap, governance model or measurable AI adoption plan.

That creates a major gap between interest and implementation — and a significant competitive advantage for businesses that move now.

3. The North East has a unique opportunity.

The North East is one of Britain's most important emerging AI investment regions. The UK Government's AI Opportunities Action Plan identified the North East as a priority region for investment in digital infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and AI-enabled economic development.

But infrastructure alone will not transform local businesses. Adoption will.

4. AI is a productivity strategy, not an IT project.

The businesses seeing the greatest value from AI are not necessarily using the most advanced tools. They are solving practical problems: reducing admin, speeding up customer response, improving reporting, removing bottlenecks.

AI should not begin with technology. It should begin with the question: Where is time, money or opportunity being wasted?

5. The advantage will compound.

AI adoption is not a one-off project — it is a capability. Businesses that begin now will learn faster, adapt faster and build internal confidence before their competitors.

Those who wait may find that the gap is not just technological. It will be operational, cultural and commercial. And much harder to close.

💡 WHAT THIS MEANS FOR NORTH EAST BUSINESSES

The question is not whether AI will change your sector. It already is.

The question is whether your organisation will lead that change — or find itself catching up in two or three years' time.

North Forge AI works with businesses across the North East to cut through the noise and build practical AI adoption plans that deliver measurable results. No hype. No unnecessary complexity. Just clear thinking about where AI creates real value in your specific operation.

If this issue raised questions about where your business stands, that conversation starts with a reply to this email.

📅 WHAT'S COMING IN ISSUE 2

Next issue we focus on the sectors where AI adoption is moving fastest across the North East — and the specific use cases generating the strongest returns. We'll also profile one NE business that has already started and share what they learned.

Until then — forward this to a colleague who should be thinking about this.
